One of the Funniest Things I've Read in a Long Time
From a Slashdot thread about a helium leak at a supercollider:

    > Are they just afraid no one will take them
    > seriously if they sound like the chipmunks
    > when they report their findings?

Picture one guy yelling "Run, run! We'll all suffocate!" in a chipmunk voice, and everyone else laughing at how funny he sounds, and passing out. And dying.

Heading up to grab a remaining 4Ker, Mt. Whiteface. Getting a late start as our family's favorite restuaurant and bar just re-opened and there was a big gathering of all of the old regulars last night, but I'm going alone and it won't be dark until late. I was going to go with a friend from the Trail (Ziploch) who recently contacted me, but that fell through. No worries--he's in Newton, so it'll happen.

I still need to post the pics from my last hike, a few weeks back up Mt. Jackson w/Dan and from a walk in the Hammond Pond Reservation area with Eric. In the meantime, it turns out Ziploch has his journal and pics online including the Centra VA section that we met up during.
A pic of Carrie, myself, and Ziploch on top of a peak *just* outside Pearisburg with Virginia on one side and West Virginia to the other.
A pic of me sweating and squinting into the sun the last time we saw each other.
A pic of Carrie and her dog Masa--I've never met such a shy dog in my life, and I don't know if you can tell, but Masa has a 5-inch mohawk of hair going down her back to provide better padding for her pack.

Sam and I have done a bunch of work on a new garden. Funny thing--after you have a stone wall put up in one's yard, said yard ends up incredibly rocky.

I successfully patched a 8-brick section of the front steps. Could be better, but for a 1st try using concrete, I think you have to look decently closely before you notice they're not perfectly straight.

Specifics depend on how things go with tearing apart the house, but no question--there shall be a barbecue in June.

Done with breakfast, time to head North. Yay for late dusk.

    May Day
Anyone interested in getting up early with me and going to the May Day festivities starting on the Charles at 6:15/30 tomorrow?

Sometimes, when a boss says to use a method in particularly bad style, I imagine a large Thor-type god with a huge hammer slamming it down on whatever computer I'm on yelling "KLUGE!".

    Winter Mts., Computers, Time?
As promised, a few pictures of my hike in February. )
I got what were hands-down the best views of the full Presidential Range in all my years hiking. You can view the whole Presidential range panorama here from Mt. Madison to the Webster Cliffs. Other pictures are here (click on them to view in correct scale).
This hike absolutely kicked my ass.

In other news, I got my first new computer in over 7 years, which is very nice, and needed. It's been a long time since I've seen a computer case this empty.

Apologies for dropping off of the face of the earth. I've been giving 110% at work for a good bit now, and haven't had time for much else, including LJ, hiking, and people. It's frustrating work, but a huge amount is getting done in return. In any case, one way or another, the pressure is off by the end of the month.

    Sledding Tuckermans
Went up to Mt. Washington with Eric on that cold Sunday a week and a half ago. Hiked up to the base of the Tuckerman's Ravine bowl, and sledded most of the way down--such a good idea.

    Moosilauke in the Winter
Been meaning to post this. Went up Moosilauke with Sam a week or so ago. Above treeline was windy and covered in rime ice.

    Hike and Frustrations
Yesterday was extremely great and extremely frustrating.
I went up to the Whites alone, and so decided to knock off a few more 4,000-footers from the list (now 44 down, 4/3.5 left to do). I got to a trailhead with only one other car there and headed up to hike North and South Mt. Hancock. I was somewhat scared by the guide's description of the trail including snippets like "straight up, very steep and rough" and "unrelievedly steep". As usual with the guide, it was not nearly so bad, and I was in general reminded of how much easier hiking is with only a day pack.
    The hike )
When I got home, my beautiful maple was gone--this tree was somewhere between 100 and 300 years old and too big for Sam and my arms to wrap around together. Unfortunately, it's core had been rotted out my whole life, and it was only getting more rotted and top-heavy. It's now lying in pieces next to the driveway. I spent hours at a time swinging from that tree, often using the trunk to push off of, have pushed my cousins on it whenever they were around, and hoped that many more generations of Fraumenis would do the same. It was not a happy thing to come home to, especially as it was there that morning.
Later that night, I headed off to a gathering not long after 8:00. It finally became clear to me given it's distance from public transportation and how early buses stopped, I would have arrived, then had to turn right around to not miss the last subway. I turned around at Riverside, very frustrated as I had been very much looking forward to it. At least I had my kittie to curl up with at night.
I am so incredibly looking forward to this coming weekend--Sam, my family, and bringing my 7 and 11-year-old cousins on their 1st White Mountain overnighter!

    7:29 am
Went to the Whites with Sam this past Saturday. Good hike--with rain ending in the morning. We now know of another moose stomping ground, as there were tons of moose tracks on trails we took, clearly more recent than the rain.
Just back from purchasing and crushing grapes. I have to remember to be extra careful not to bite my nails for a bit.

Somewhat sick this week, but no fever, nothing major. I've been putting out feelers for jobs, so far only through contacts, although the next step is to start sending resumes out to places I find online (any suggestions would be appreciated.)
As every Fall, weekends are quickly filling. In the next month/month.5 I am staff at the Freedom Rally and the Head of the Charles, I am taking my 7 & 11-year-old cousins up for their first White Mountain overnighter, there is at least one family gathering, and, schedule allowing, I'll be heading to the Whites with a few friends (although I'm not the organizer for that trip).
Got jury duty for the third time, bah. Joined an RPG with a bunch of old high school friends.

I need to get out more evenings, however, I'm still holed up far too much, in part because job stuff is all done on my computer, and in part because I'm paranoid about keeping friends up who need to wake up early the next morning.

    Arrived
I still want to see people, but I haven't got any preferences for times, so I'll put out there Sunday afternoon/evening. Do let me know if there is a more optimal time for you or others. Nothing major, but I'll have, for example, pizza ingredients on hand for as people desire. Seeing people anyone on any other days or times would kick ass, too, so give me a call/send an E-mail.

    Almost Home
My hike is almost complete. I will be traveling home on Monday, August 14th. I want to see everybody I haven't in far too long! Most likely, this will be in party form, although mt schedule, of course, is pretty open. I'll be breifly away on the weekend of the 24-27, so a party would likely be held on the weekend of the 18-20, but let me know--post here (or E-mail me) if you are interested and any requests for time(s). I'll definitely have solid & liquid food of some sorts available.

    Heading Off
Time to shut Melinda down and put the tape and such away. Took a few "before" pictures after trimming bits, and everything is done.
Give me a call and leave a message, it'll be the main/only way to contact me.

    Two Roads Diverged in a Wood . . .
. . . and I took the one white blazed.

Completely un-planned and so quickly that I am still reeling, my near-future plans have been turned upside-down. I am leaving to complete what I started three years ago--the Appalachian Trail. I have already done over half of it, and we shall see how much of what is left I can complete. I am not very optimistic about my knee, given my injury last October, but I have been taking good care of it, and it has been treating me well in my exertions as of late.

This journal will be all but un-touched during that time. Should you want to know anything about me, you should see [info]atwhispers where I will post the once or twice I might be at a computer, but where Sam will be making brief posts as to where I am when I talk with her.
If you want to contact me, the only way is through my cell phone. If you want me to contact you, you must E-mail me your phone number and snail mail address. I shall post more information (like places I will be checking for mail) in a few days when it is more settled on that journal.

Do give me a call if you want to see me, I would love to see you, as long as you're okay with it being at my place and I will likely need to be preparing as we socialize.
I'll miss you guys, but I'll be back--possibly soon depending on my knee, but definitely by October at absolute latest (which is unlikely).

    Contact Info
Those who want to hear from me any time soon, should E-mail me their phone number and snail mail address. You should do this soon--you have under one week.
Apologies to those who I am renegging on, and who use Melinda.

    Domain Registrars
So, my domain registration is finally expiring (I was an idiot and made a 5-year purchase after a few years without issues). I am switching my registrar--no question. Any suggestions? Ideally, I would like to have my domain go to my computer in every case except E-mail, which I would like the registrar to handle forwarding multiple accounts for, so that it'll get through even when my internet is down. Thanks in advance.

    CSS Positioning: Bottom
To quote someone online: "I see why people use tables."

Is anyone out there feeling generous and has any idea how to get a DIV all the way at the bottom of a page? My page has nothing on it but four DIVs. I want one at the top, one at the bottom, and two side-by-side in the middle, and I have all of it working save the one at the bottom with absolute positioning. I would think that "position: absolute; bottom: 0px;" would do it for the bottom DIV, but that puts it at the bottom of the current viewed section of the page (e.g. it is on the bottom of the page only if the page fits on one screen and if the page needs a left-scroll-bar, the bottom DIV appears on the bottom of the viewed page, meaning on top of everything you can only see by scolling the page down.
At least it looks the same in Opera, Firefox, and IE :)

    Thanks muchly.

    ***** ADDDED *****
Okie, so I've done some more work which can explain this better.
This page and this page use floating fow the left and right DIVs, but both fail in that if you make your browser window smaller, the main section gets popped below the nav section rather than a horizontal scroll bar showing up (it doesn't even break at spaces in the text first).
This page uses absolute positioning, but fails in that the bottom section covers the nav section if your browser is not tall enough.
Lastly, this page uses floating and width %'s, but that means that content may flow out from the DIVs if your browser is not big enough.
Even Novalis' example (I only changed the text within the DIVs) has the issue that if there is a long piece of content without whitespace in it to break on, that content flows out from the div.

    Commute
Biked all of the way in to work today for the first time since injuring myself on the Cabot range last October. It only took 35/40 minutes with a mountain bike and me not being used to it. This is a good thing. I am much happier when I get regular exercise and the ride is very soothing, when not rush hour (and almost the same as when I worked at ActivePrime).

Great, if short, week with Sam and beautiful hike along the Western end of Franconia Notch.
